What role has rowing played in your weight loss?

Rowing is where I started—five minutes a day, at home. It’s where I warm-up, and it’s where I do my cardio, along with running and hiking.

What is your current exercise routine?

I try to lift weights two to four times a week and row or run two times a week.

What changes did you make in your eating and nutrition habits?

I ate fewer carbohydrates overall, and tried to eat the bulk of my carbohydrates before and after exercise. I also focused on eating more protein and having fruits and/or vegetables with every meal.

How has your life changed since your weight loss?

I am leaner, lighter, more confident, more flexible (literally and metaphorically) and happier.

Advice for others?

Have achievable, short-term goals. Forget about “I want to lose 60 pounds” for now, and try “I’ll work out three times this week”. Massive weight loss and marathons are down the road; do something today.

Start small: begin with five minutes of exercise a day. Also examine what you’re eating and cut down or cut out something—like stop drinking soda or sports drinks and switch to non-calorie drinks or water.
