PM2/PM2+ Troubleshooting

This section is designed to help you diagnose and fix problems with your Performance Monitor.

If you have questions or problems, or if you need further troubleshooting assistance, please contact us at 800.245.5676 (US and Canada) or [email protected].

Symptom

The Performance Monitor display has faded or incomplete segments.

Resolution

Faded or incomplete segments indicate a poor connection between the LCD and the circuit board. To remedy, clean the LCD, the circuit board and the rubber elastomers that make the connections. Using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on a cotton swab, do the following:

  1. Clean the edges of the LCD that make contact with the rubber strips.
  2. Clean the two edges of the rubber strips that make contact with board and LCD.
  3. Clean the two rows of contacts on the circuit board.
  4. Clean the areas of the circuit board where buttons (keypad) make contact.
  5. Clean the back side of the buttons.

If cleaning the monitor does not improve the display, an upgrade to a PM5 monitor will be needed. Replacement LCDs are no longer available for PM2/PM2+ Performance Monitors. The PM5 Monitor Retrofit Kit is available from Concept2.

Symptom

The Performance Monitor is displaying E011 or E012.

Resolution

This indicates a non-serious error code that is built into the PM. Clear the error code as follows:

  1. Press and hold the four bottom buttons on the face of the monitor (Recall, right arrow, up arrow and OK).
  2. While holding these buttons, press and release On/Off.
  3. Release the four buttons. The monitor will do some fast counting for 10–15 seconds and then display a number 5 in the center area.
  4. When the 5 appears, press and release On/Off again. Zeros should come up and the monitor should work. If it doesn’t, you may need to replace the PM.

Symptom

The Performance Monitor is displaying other error codes (E001–E010).

Resolution

These codes may indicate a more serious problem with your monitor. Try to clear the error as follows:

  1. Change the batteries.
  2. Press and hold the four bottom buttons on the face of the monitor (Recall, right arrow, up arrow and OK).
  3. While holding these buttons, press and release On/Off.
  4. Release the four buttons. The monitor will do some fast counting for 10–15 seconds and then display a number 5 in the center area.
  5. When the 5 appears, press and release On/Off again. Zeros should come up, and the monitor should work. If it doesn’t, you may need to replace the PM.

Symptom

The Performance Monitor does not come on when you begin rowing.

Resolutions

  • The monitor may need new batteries. Replace the batteries (PDF).
  • The batteries may be installed upside down. Reverse the orientation of the batteries.
  • The pickup wire may not be plugged in securely on the back of the monitor. Ensure the plug is inserted completely.

If the monitor continues to be unresponsive, it needs to be replaced with a new PM5.

Symptom

The entire Performance Monitor screen (not just heart rate display) goes blank when the heart rate cable is plugged in.

Resolution

This is generally caused by a short-circuit that occurs if the heart rate cable is plugged into the PM while the monitor is turned on. If the heart rate cable is still plugged into the PM:

  1. Push ON/OFF once to turn the PM off.
  2. Push ON/OFF again to turn the PM back on again.

If you removed the heart rate cable when the screen went blank:

  1. Push ON/OFF once to turn the PM off.
  2. Plug the heart rate cable into the monitor.
  3. Push ON/OFF again to turn the PM back on again.

We recommend plugging the heart rate cable in only when the PM is off.

Symptom

The Performance Monitor comes on but stays on zero when you begin rowing.

Resolution

The pickup wire may not be securely plugged in on the back of the monitor. Ensure the plug is inserted completely. If the plug is inserted completely and the problem persists, you may need to replace the pickup wire. Contact Concept2.
