Motivation and Consistency are Key

The key to successful weight loss is consistent exercise. Exercise burns calories so the more you can exercise, the more calories you will burn. Making exercise a daily habit is a great goal. Taking one rest day per week is a good idea, but the more consistent you are with daily exercise - and the longer the better - the bigger the boost you will provide to your weight-loss efforts and long term health.

One of the big ways that Concept2 Rowing can help you lose weight is by providing you with a variety of fun reasons to row and keep rowing. Combine these with your own desire to lose weight and you will have a winning combination.

Here is a brief description of the motivational programs we provide, with links to more detailed descriptions and instructions.

Have fun!

Year-long Challenges

  • Weekly Winners - Each week, we draw the name of a "weekly winner" from everyone who has rowed at least 20,000 meters that week and logged it in their online logbook. We draw a second "weekly winner" from those who have rowed and logged at least 50,000 meters. Prizes include Concept2 socks and t-shirts. Check out our current Weekly Winners.
  • Annual Meters Honor Board - On this Honor Board, we post the total meters rowed to date by all online logbook participants since the beginning of the "online logbook year" on May 1 every year so it's great incentive to row regularly! If you do keep your rowing log online with us, you may choose not to be included by indicating that in your Personal Logbook preferences. Otherwise, you will be listed with all other participants. Find out more. View the 2007 Annual Meters Honor Board.

Special Short-term Challenges

  • Holiday Challenge - This has become one of our most popular online challenges. People love it because it helps them get through the holidays without gaining weight. In fact, many people lose weight! The challenge runs from Thanksgiving to Christmas.
  • March Madness - This challenge encourages consistent daily rowing. It's not so much the total meters at the end, but the total number of days in the month that you've rowed.
  • Global Marathon Challenge - Here's an online challenge that will help you push your distance limits. Choose either a half (21, 097 meters) or full marathon (42,195 meters) to row all in one sitting and join a growing number of rowers around the world who achieve this goal.

Other Special Online Challenges - You can read about all of these on our Individual Challenges page.

  • Valentine's Day Challenge
  • Skeleton Crew
  • Solstice Row
  • Blue Moon Row

Perpetual Challenges

  • Million Meter Club - From the very first meter you row, be sure to keep track of your total meters, either online or on paper. Every meter counts, regardless of how fast or slow you row and even meters from other challenges can be added in. When you get to a million meters, let us know and as a reward for your efforts, we'll send you a pin, certificate, and our special Million Meter T-shirt for free. You will continue to earn prizes for every additional million meters you row.

Team Efforts
We also support a number of team or club-based challenges. If you row at health club, you can join their team (or start their team if they don't have one yet)! Find out more.

  • Virtual team challenges: We will be holding our first annual Virtual Team Rowing Challenge in January 2006. Watch for details. Put together a team of your own, or join an existing team. These are not physical clubs, but collections of people from anywhere who share the same goals or interests and want to work together in this challenge.
  • Club/University Standings: Virtual teams may also participate in our Club/University Standings Honor Board online. Like the individual Annual Meters Honor Board, this challenge lasts all year long, and is thus a great source of motivation for the long term. View this season's University/Club Standings.
