Daily
Clean the monorail with a non-abrasive scouring pad.
Every 50 hours (weekly for institutional users):
Clean and lubricate the chain. This wiping procedure will serve to lubricate the chain for maximum life of the chain and sprockets and to keep the chain clean of dirt and lubricant residue.
- Pull the handle all the way out to the end of the monorail to expose the "working" portion of the chain. If two people are available for the job, one can hold the handle out while the other wipes the chain. If one person is doing the job, the spring clip, which is used to retain the chain during shipment, may be inserted into the chain where it enters the monorail to hold the return tension.
- Put a teaspoon of Concept2 Chain Oil (a purified mineral oil), 20W motor oil, or 3-in-1 oil on a clean rag or paper towel and wipe it along the length of the chain between the handle and the cage. Repeated wiping will soften and remove dirt leaving the chain with a thin, clean, lubricating film. Excess oil should be removed by wiping the chain with a dry paper towel.
- If the chain is very dirty or has not been previously maintained, this process should be repeated several times.
Every 250 hours of use (monthly for institutional users):
- Inspect the chain for stiff links. Stiff links in the chain can cause the chain to skip over the sprocket creating a severe wear situation. We recommend a monthly inspection of the portion of the chain that contacts the sprockets. This should take about 5 minutes. Stiff links may be caused by a lack of lubrication, or a build-up of dirt and old lubrication. In most cases, cleaning and lubrication will loosen up the links. If it does not, the chain should be replaced. If the chain skips on the sprocket, the ergometer should not be used and Concept2 should be contacted.
- Adjust the bottom seat roller if the seat seems to be too loose on the monorail. Loosen the nut and bolt holding the bottom roller in place, remove the roller, and move it to the next tighter set of holes in the seat carriage. Reassemble and tighten nut lightly.
- Inspect the chain handle connection. Specifically look closely at the hole in the connector piece through which the U-bolt passes. This hole will tend to elongate with wear. If the hole is over 7/16" long, or if the U-bolt itself is nearly half worn through, the whole chain and connectors should be replaced. Before you order these parts, we recommend that you remove the skewer from the monorail following the instructions on the
Return Mechanism Instructions PDF and check for any other worn out parts such as the shock cord, travelling pulley, chain slide, and white plastic pulleys. You may want to order a complete new skewer assembly if several parts are worn. It will make installation of the new chain much easier.
- Tighten the shock cord if the handle does not return all the way against chain guide. To tighten the shock cord, pull the S.C.A.M. (see
Return Mechanism Instructions PDF) out the back of the monorail with a pair of pliers and feed enough cord through the S.C.A.M. to achieve the desired tension. If you have more than 6" of excess cord, it should be trimmed after taping the area to be cut to prevent unraveling.
- Check to be sure that the following nuts and bolts are not loose:
- Two 1/4" nylon insert nuts at handle
- Four 5/6" bolts holding flywheel to frame
- Four 5/16" nuts holding legs to monorail
- Four 3/8" nuts holding arms and footboards to monorail
Approximately Every 500 Hours of Use
Replace the monitor batteries following directions on the PM1 page.
Handle Storage Suggestion
It is best to let the handle rest against the fan cage rather that in the handle hook when the machine is not in constant use (for example, overnight or between workouts). This will prolong the life of the shock cord.
Important Notes
- Use of this machine with a worn or weakened part, such as the chain, sprockets, chain/handle connector, handle U-bolt or shock cord, may result in injury to the user. When in doubt about the condition of any part, Concept2 strongly advises that it be replaced immediately.
- The monitor and flywheel are sealed units. You should not attempt to take these assemblies apart. Please contact us if you have a problem with either of these parts.
