Nutrition: Healthy Eating for Weight Control

The most effective way to lose weight is a combination of exercise and healthy food choices. This is not a short-term proposition, but a long-term change in lifestyle.

Registered Dietitian Sara Wing, Health Programs Manager for Cabot Creamery in Vermont, provides these four tips to get you started:

  • Start your day with whole grains like whole wheat toast or oatmeal. They will fill you up and provide long-lasting energy.
  • Choose no-calorie drinks like water, seltzer water or unsweetened tea. By eliminating one sweetened drink a day you could lose up to 10 pounds in one year!
  • Eat a fruit or vegetable serving at every meal for a healthy dose of fiber and antioxidants; these foods are essential for weight loss and reduce the risk of age-related problems like cancer and heart disease.
  • Eat lean protein like poultry, egg whites, fish or low-fat dairy at every meal to prevent loss of calorie-burning muscle.
