What role has rowing played in your weight loss?

My knee aches and swells when I run as the result of an off-road motorcycle accident. If I had not been introduced to the Concept2 Indoor Rower, I know I would not have been successful in my weight loss.

I began working out with a trainer. By my first appointment, I had already committed myself to not quitting. I told him I wanted to be his star client. He started me out on a Concept2 Model C doing circuits with three- and five-minute rows and weights in between each set. I ended up purchasing a used Model C and rowing at home in between my workouts with the trainer. Eventually, I sold my Model C and bought a new Model E. I was hooked!

The competitive nature of rowing is exciting: you can beat your previous results or go after others’ results. Now, each year I compete at the SWEAT race in Dallas. My best 2K is 6:45.6. My goal on the Concept2 Online Rankings is to be in the top 10% of rowers in Texas for each distance. I upload all my rows with RowPro.

What is your current exercise routine?

I try not to be stagnant with my workouts so I alter what I do quite a bit:

  • For an individual row, I row at least 5K. I complete the Skeleton Crew and Holiday Challenge every year.
  • When doing weights, I use the indoor rower to warm-up. The weight routines help me rotate through muscle groups and alternate movements. I include plyometric movements and exercises that challenge my balance and keep my body guessing.
  • If the weather is nice, I ride my mountain bike for two hours.

If you could offer one bit of advice for others who want to lose weight, what would it be?

Move. Move your body. Your mind and heart will follow.
