March 15–April 15, 2008
We invite you to join the 9th Annual Online North American Rowing Challenge, to be held March 15–April 15, 2008. Follow the directions below to create a new team or edit an existing team.

The Details

  • Each team rows as many meters as they can collectively between 12:01 a.m., Saturday, March 15 and 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, April 15
  • This is a team challenge. You must belong to a team to participate. This is not the same as your club affiliation in your profile. See "How To Join a Team" below.
  • Teams must consist of at least two (2) people.
  • All teams wanting to participate in NARC must be signed up by midnight March 28.
  • All team members must be added to their teams by midnight on March 28.
  • Only indoor rower meters count (no water meters please).
  • Meters must be entered online. Because of the large number of participants in the challenge, we cannot accept results via phone, fax or email. We suggest that any members who have access to the Internet create their own profile so that they can enter their own results.
  • Meters rowed each week should be entered no later than midnight on Friday of that week. This works on the honor system. It makes it fair and fun for everyone if you can watch the progress of the teams that you are competing against.
  • Deadline for entering meters: Friday, April 18, 2008 at midnight.

Who Can Participate

Teams must be an established "club," under one of the following divisions:
  • Health Club
  • YMCA
  • JCC
  • School Rowing Team/Club
  • Rowing Club
  • Corporate Fitness
  • Military
  • Correctional Facility
  • Rehab Center or Hospital Program

Virtual, long-distance, purely electronic groupings of rowers and people and/or individuals not affiliated with a club will be allowed, but will not be eligible for prizes. Additionally, only clubs located in the U.S. and Canada are eligible to receive prizes.

Team standings in all divisions will be posted online throughout the duration of the challenge. There will be separate Honor Boards for each club division, so you can compare your club’s performance with other similar clubs.

Incentives and Rewards

  • There will be prizes for the top ten individual men and women.
  • There will be prizes for an additional 10 men and 10 women by random draw from all those completing at least 100,000 meters during the challenge.
  • The club with the greatest number of meters rowed will win their choice of a Model D or Model E Indoor Rower (U.S. & Canada clubs only).
  • The club with the greatest number of meters rowed per participant (minimum of five people per team to qualify for this prize) will win their choice of a Model D or Model E Indoor Rower (U.S. & Canada clubs only).
  • We will have two random draws for a Model D or Model E Indoor Rower from all participating clubs having at least 5 members on their team (U.S. & Canada clubs only).
  • Specially designed certificates of completion will be available via download to all participants at the end of the event.

Notes:

  • Virtual teams and their participants are not eligible to receive shipped prizes.
  • Indoor rower prizes are only available for clubs in the U.S. & Canada as we cannot ship the rowers overseas.

How To Join a Team

  1. Establish an Online Logbook if you haven't already (it's FREE!). To establish an online logbook for yourself, visit the Online Logbook home page, click Register under New Users and follow the directions. All of your meters must be entered into your Online Logbook.
  2. Click Teams at the top of the logbook window and follow the instructions.

Notes:

  • You may only belong to one team.
  • If you do not have access to a computer but want to participate as a team member, contact your Team Captain and ask if they would enter your meters for you. Due to the popularity of this challenge, we strongly encourage you to create your own Online Logbook and log your own meters to keep the workload manageable for the Team Captains.
  • To communicate with teams or find a team to join, visit the NARC Team Challenge Forum.

Information for Team Captains Only

Teams need to be set up specifically for NARC 2008. Pre-existing teams from the University/Club Standings year-round listing will not automatically be included. Please follow the steps given here to add your team to NARC 2008. (Printable version)

  1. All team management tasks (creating the team, adding team members, and so on) occur through your Online Logbook. If you don't already have one, visit the Online Logbook home page and click Register under "New Users" to create one (it's FREE!). We encourage you to do this sooner rather than later in case you have any questions. Once you do this, you will automatically receive email bulletins about the event.
  2. Important: On your profile page, in "Messages for others to see", type in "NARC2008"—this is what designates you as a Team Captain for this challenge.
  3. Be sure to include your email address in your profile.
  4. Create Your Team.
  5. Add Team Members.
  6. Already have a team set up from a past team challenge event? Add an Existing Team to NARC2008
  7. Once the challenge begins, team meters accumulate as follows:
    • Team members who have their own online logbooks will enter their meters in their online logbooks. These meters will automatically count towards the team totals.
    • Team members who do not have their own online logbooks will need to send you their information. you will then need to enter these meters using the "Quick Meters" in the Team Manager page.

New Feature for This Year: Open Team Membership

Everyone who has a logbook now has access to the Teams page and it’s possible for anyone to request to join your team. On your Edit Team Info page, you’ll see a new check box to designate your team as “Open." If your team is “Open”, anyone can join your team immediately. If this box is not checked, only the team captain can add new members. If someone is interested in a team that is not open, they will be able to send a ranking email to the team captain and express an interest in joining. The team captain will then get an email with easy links to respond to the person and add them to the team if they choose. Remember, however, that although anybody can enter NARC, only U.S. and Canadian physical clubs are eligible for prizes so, if you want to be in with a chance of winning, please ensure all team members are actually part of your club.
