Esther Gokhale's book '8 Steps To A Painfree Back' has helped me regain my ability to walk more than 80 feet without numbing back spasms for the first time in over six or seven years.
Near the end of the 2007-08 rowing year I had to severely curtail my rowing due to painful numbness that seemed to result from severe irritation of the nerves to my fingers and hands. My attempt to resume rowing more during the most recent Holiday and January challenges left me realising I had badly overdone things and wondering how long it would take (if ever) to regain normal sensations in my hands and be able to sleep without being wakened by painful numbness in my fingers.
In trying to implement Esther Gokhale's ideas for proper use of the back, which involve the total spine and address sitting and walking as well as suggestions for how to lie down, and also how one's shoulders and neck should be carried, I find my neck and shoulders and the numbness and pain in my fingers and hands have been wonderfully helped as well. Recently I have been frequently able to forget how much trouble I had been having and feel like a 'normal' person again.
I have even begun carefully feeling my way to rowing more again.
Please think seriously of taking a look at her wonderful book if you have any back or neck issues... It also can benefit problems one might not even think could be related to how we sit, stand or walk.
Her website is at http://egwellness.com/
This is not a paid commercial :) I just feel her book has helped me so much and I would like to share the benefit with anyone else who might find it helpful also.

Good time of the year to get back work and keep on shape.
Do any of you know what happened to Carol Goodsole?
Virginia is really going. Can any of you catch her?
This is a good way to talk to each other.
Let's get some friendship going. Let's care about each other.

I've got to jump on board again before this old body gets any older. I know my "buddy erg" helps so much. "Hi" to my Tasmania crewmates for this new year and some great challenges.

The storm tossed Atlantic beckons and the lure of the erg lessens. My excuse for the meager metres, so far.
Happy rowing everyone.

My goal this year is very simple: to become a member of the 5 million meter club. I also hope to be more consistent in my rowing this year and support my team on TAO.

I began rowing at 40 after a false positive on a stress cardiogram. Sarted with an Alden and now row a Peinert lihgtweight out of the Thompson Boat House here in DC. Summers split between the river and the erg. Full time erging now. Delighted to be part of the AM - it is a constant motivator.

Rowing and I first met in 1964 when I joined the Dalphin Club in San Francisco. Unfortunately it lasted only a year. Now adays when I use my Concept 2 I close my eyes and see the ripples disapear through the fog as I glide across the glassy waters of Lake Merced. I look forward to getting to know you all and vice versa. Thanks to All.

The generosity of the Ancient Mariners folks has allowed me back into the boats after a far-too-long absence. I only hope I can return to holding up my end of the oar. The goal I have set myself is on the water at the Senior Games in San Franciso and Australia in 2009. I figure if I tell enough people I'll be too ashamed to fail.
