Hey Free Spirits!
I grew up in Northern Maine, Millinocket, for those of you who have heard of it. A canoeist and Kayaker. Tried out for the crew team at Syracuse after blowing out my ankle playing football. National champions in Men's Heavyweight 8 in 1987. Graduated in '90 and didn't touch an erg again until 2006... when I was contacted by Michelle and Free Spirits. The rest is history... I remembered how much I loved to row, and how much I enjoyed being part of a team. Thanks Free Spirits for the encouragement.

I am the other half of the wife-husband team on the 10,000 meter board and in Free Spirits. We stayed on the 10K board the last two years, and are somewhat less compulsive now, but we intend to finish on the 10K board again. We started erging at the suggestion of a trainer at an US Sailing symposium in 2003 that rowing was more sailing specific than elliptical machines. Like many others on the boards, a former long distance runner with defective legs.

Been erging since mid 2007 and getting more serious by the day.
My most pressing goal is to go sub 6:30 for 2k before BIRC 2009. It would, of course, be nice to repeat this feat at the race itself!
I've also become addicted to RowPro which is just a superb motivational training tool.

Into my second year of erging and enjoying it more and more.
Completed my second marathon which was easier than the first (how can one say such a thing)- will probably do it again before the year is out. Still have the challenge of completing 50 km to fulfill.
The inspiration and support found in belonging to a team can not be underrated. For anyone new to the game don't be afraid to ask someone who belongs to a team, you'll find there's a whole new world out there.

I am an outdoor enthusiast residing in British Columbia. While I used to row in University, I now use the indoor rower as cross training for my climbing and mountaineering, as well as keeping fit for my Search and Rescue Team and my work as a white water rafting guide (not to mention fighting the "baker's belly" - lol). My goals this year for the C2 are to row a marathon and compete in my first 2000m sprint competition!

My water rowing weight was 96kg so my ergo is here in an effort to get me back there. Joining the Free Spirits (www.freespiritsrowing.com) has been fun and encouraged me to get working again.
I managed a few hundred thousand metres last season, but failed to do the annual end of season marathon (I did a FM in 2004 and 2005). New baby and all that... This year my target is 700,000m. Mind you, at the rate I have rowed since the motivation of Free Spirits, I will achieve 2 million! It can't last...

I got my motivation back for exercise due to a juice detox I did for a week (Jason 'the juicemaster' Vales - 7lbs in 7 days) in Oct '07. I lost 15lbs in this week and gained so much energy I have been rowing most days ever since. I looked for inspiration from "C2" - and found Free Spirits; on 7th/8th Feb managed to row for 24hours covering 254,220 m which took me over 5million lifetime metres. I'm currently a very sore but very happy man.

All my rowing is set at 10.000m distance. I aim to complete each one sub 40'. The photograph shows me 3/4 of the way through a 10,000m row with a bit of a sweat on and consentrating, as ever, on that split!
My PB is 37:56.0 (1:53.8) in June 2006. I did the damage in the first half of the row with 1:51 and 1:52 splits, I then hung in there for the the remainder. Weight control is also an added bonus to my training routine. I completed a marathon in August '07 in 3hrs 15"08.4'

My fourth season. Again I want to row at least 1 million meters. And since I seem to be free of injuries at the moment I also hope to row some PB's (rowed some already in the first month of the new season)). My rankings will have to be at least within the 20 percent for my agegroup. At the end of the season, that is!
To everyone out there: have fun!

My goal this year is to make the world top 750 for 10k and 5k, which probably means knocking 2 minutes off my best time (update - I eventually managed it - albeit my top ranking (44th) was achieved when the season started and before any of the serious rowers had entered their best times!)
Any helpful pointers or ideas for motivation would be much appreciated.
A back injury set me back in early November but as I write this update (19th Nov) I'm getting back on track and looking to do the Holiday Challenge.

Erg owner since 1988. Back in the 90's I had some top 10 placings for the 1/2 hour and 1 hour rankings and did 10 million meters from 94-98. These days I use the erg mostly for cross training but sometimes get into a groove of accumulating meters.
Road cycling has been my primary sport since the 70's. I am currently riding over 12,000 miles a year and doing weekly long rides of 100 miles or more year round.
If you are a road cyclist who is successfully cross training with the erg, drop me an email.

I had never seen the inside of a gym and still can't swim. In February 2003 I met my fiance, who convinced me to get a little fitter so I joined a gym near work in the October of that year. A bad motor cycle accident in my teens and a couple skiing accidents a decade ago have left my knees and an ankle in a bad way so I started rowing and cycling rather than running to keep the impact down.

Only started rowing properly in June 2006 after I bought the Concept 2 in March. I have to say I am really enjoying it and this website and the community using it act as a fantastic source of information and inspiration. Juggling my own business and a one year old may mean the million is a little out of reach, but I can have a good time trying!

Passed 8 million lifetime meters on 27 November 2006. I've found that focusing on about an hour of rowing per day has been a motivating goal for this season. I also find that being a member of Free Spirits is a very inspiring force as there are so many members whose workouts are just amazing.

Hi, not exactly a natural rower! Bought CII 2 years ago and just started doing the challenges this summer. Thanks to the organisers of this site and especially all those who post. It's all extremely useful to those of us not part of a club. Here's to staying fit in my 40s instead of trying to get fit in my 40s ;-)

I thoroughly enjoyed my first season of rowing and hope I can climb higher up the rankings during the 2009 season.
I'm a fitness rower, using the erg at my local gym twice a week. During the summer I aim to notch up miles on my road bike at least twice week. I'm amazed how much my cycling form has improved since last summer, with the rowing during the winter!
Wishing everyone a good 2009 season.

Started Rowing training on April 24th 2007, after piling on pounds over the last year (up to 136.5kg/300lbs). Since then am down to 108.9kg, spurred on by the motivation of competing at various events around the country. Recent triumphs have been a sub 5 mile (1609m) and a new PB for the 500m of 1:19.6 at the Newark Indoor Rowing Champs 2008

Log Date July, 2007: Quit smoking when I turned 40 on 1/2/2006 after 25+ years. I decided that ice cream was going to be my replacement and 11 months and uncounted quarts later, I began to lose my figure. Although I was probably still healthier with 1/2 quart of Butter Pecan than a pack of Merits, I chose to try my wife's gym. Stair-Masters, bicycles, treadmills, Free Weights, weight machines, funky elyptical machines...ugh. After 8 months I've finally discovered rowing. Nice! I've basically got my own machine in the corner of the local gym that nobody visits..all to meself and I love it. I'm looking better, and mind you....I'm still eating loads of ice cream....and smokeless.

Came back to indoor rowing after noticing an unsightly bulge around my midriff which mysteriously appeared around my 40th birthday! It's been 11 years since I last rowed competitively in the 1997 BIRC. Started up in April 2008 with my main target this year (2008) to break sub 7 which I did at the BIRC (6.55.4). Looking to increase the distance for a marathon in April 2009 and will be aiming for sub 3hrs. It's good to be back. Always happy to receive emails from fellow sufferers! - Good luck everyone.

The Concept2 must be the best investment I've made in fitness equipment. Great workout and lots of scope for improvement in terms of rankings!!!

When my C2 first arrived 3 years ago I hopped on and rowed a 2K in 8:40. It was so hard I was wasted for almost 2 hours after. I stopped rowing till this last summer (2009) when I resumed to work on losing weight. I never thought I'd even work up to a 1 hour row. Now 1 hour is a rest day row and I feel great compared to how I used to feel. 26 lbs lost and counting!

Began using the Concept 2 in Dec 2004 and got hooked straight away. Used to play rugby but now into cycling and like the way I can 'have a go' at the erg. trouble is that it just keeps coming back for more! Trying to get to 6.30 for 2k.

Hi, I am Christian. I first started rowing when my dad bought a Concept 2 just before Easter 2006. - I enjoy many sports such as football, cricket, athletics and rowing, of course. I am in no rowing club (not yet!), but I hope to make steady progress.

Getting back into erging after many years of doing little exercise, bought a model D end of last year and feeling better for it already.
My target is to beat my best 2K time 6:53 set in 1992 when I was 24, injured my left ankle quite badly some years ago in m/cycle accident so pretty sure at a mechanical disadvatage to my 24-year old self but managed a 7:05 so far.
