I heard about indoor rowing from a good friend, who was the instructor. In late 2005, I finally join his class, wow, what a great workout. As a runner for the previous ten years, which included marathon training, I thought I was a good shape. The first night was a very humbling experience. The internal challenge kept me coming back week after week. Now I train at the local YMCA always seeking to improve my times. As member of the fire service for the past 29 years, finding a way to stay in shape is important to me and right now erging is the way.

I have erged since 2004. Both of my sons rowed out of the Detroit Boat Club. I started erging after I tore my rotator cuff from swimming. I now teach indoor rowing M-F year round for Grosse Pointe Comminity Ed and the Friends of Detroit Rowing at the Hunt Club in Grosse Pointe Woods. My family and I all row - occasionally together - and we enjoy it very much. The staff at Concept 2 is always helpful when I call for parts and help with the 19 ergs we have in use. I am a Detroit Boat Club (DBC)recreational rower and have erged now for 10 years beginning when my daughter Julie signed me up for a recreational erg class. Julie then went off to the University of Michigan where she had a successful rowing career including being a member of U of M's 2001 NCAA National Championship 2V8 boat. My son Jim followed in Julie's footsteps and rowed on the Columbia University Lightweight Crew team. For the last five years I have taught adult erging classes for DBC. My two biggest rowing thrills were rowing in the 2001 Head of the Charles in a DBC veteran men's four and then watching my daughter row for the University of Michigan and my son row for the DBC Juniors, and competing in the 2003 C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints along with my son Jim where he placed 8th in the Junior Men's Lightweight division and I placed 23rd in the Veteran A Men's division.

I started erging in Jan. '03, when a co-worker talked me into taking an indoor rowing class for exercise and fitness. I have thanked her many times since, and passed the 5 million meter mark in March '08. This has improved my overall health, and increased my energy level. In the summer of '04 I began rowing on the water with the Detroit Boat Club, (the oldest rowing club in the nation, est. 1839). It's great to go out on the Detroit River on a nice summer evening, and enjoy a good row with some good people. A big thank you to my fellow erg classmates, and especially to our fearless leader, (you know who you are), for always encouraging each other to reach new heights. Row long, row strong!
