I began rowing in April, 2003. On June 21st, 2007 I passed the 10 million meter mark...thank you to my fellow FREE SPIRITs for their encouragement and support. My pic is from a recent trip I made to Smith Rock in Oregon. Awesome rock climbing.

Passed 8 million lifetime meters on 27 November 2006. I've found that focusing on about an hour of rowing per day has been a motivating goal for this season. I also find that being a member of Free Spirits is a very inspiring force as there are so many members whose workouts are just amazing.

The picture is old and so am I...but I'm still proud of it. From the right...Mike Channin, Paul Sims and Andrew Stanway after the marathon row on 28th October 2007....no 2006 - OMG nearly 3 years ago.
We raised ~£1,700 for Motor Neurone Disease - thank you everyone.
Not sure I could do it again now - need some encouragement to try again!!!
Lost a lot of form lately but hanging on in there. Will get my 10M next year!

I am the other half of the wife-husband team on the 10,000 meter board and in Free Spirits. We stayed on the 10K board the last two years, and are somewhat less compulsive now, but we intend to finish on the 10K board again. We started erging at the suggestion of a trainer at an US Sailing symposium in 2003 that rowing was more sailing specific than elliptical machines. Like many others on the boards, a former long distance runner with defective legs.

Hey Free Spirits!
I grew up in Northern Maine, Millinocket, for those of you who have heard of it. A canoeist and Kayaker. Tried out for the crew team at Syracuse after blowing out my ankle playing football. National champions in Men's Heavyweight 8 in 1987. Graduated in '90 and didn't touch an erg again until 2006... when I was contacted by Michelle and Free Spirits. The rest is history... I remembered how much I loved to row, and how much I enjoyed being part of a team. Thanks Free Spirits for the encouragement.

Well after the injury hell of 2007/8 I am now ready to hit 2008/9 season.
Its been hell the last 12 months and now I am feeling the pain in each stroke due to not that much rowing last season.
I'm starting off very slowly building back up the fitness, so the aim for this year will be to just row and not get any injuries.

Into my second year of erging and enjoying it more and more.
Completed my second marathon which was easier than the first (how can one say such a thing)- will probably do it again before the year is out. Still have the challenge of completing 50 km to fulfill.
The inspiration and support found in belonging to a team can not be underrated. For anyone new to the game don't be afraid to ask someone who belongs to a team, you'll find there's a whole new world out there.
Take a look at our website www.freespiritsrowing.com.

My water rowing weight was 96kg so my ergo is here in an effort to get me back there. Joining the Free Spirits (www.freespiritsrowing.com) has been fun and encouraged me to get working again.
I managed a few hundred thousand metres last season, but failed to do the annual end of season marathon (I did a FM in 2004 and 2005). New baby and all that... This year my target is 700,000m. Mind you, at the rate I have rowed since the motivation of Free Spirits, I will achieve 2 million! It can't last...

I had never seen the inside of a gym and still can't swim. In February 2003 I met my fiance, who convinced me to get a little fitter so I joined a gym near work in the October of that year. A bad motor cycle accident in my teens and a couple skiing accidents a decade ago have left my knees and an ankle in a bad way so I started rowing and cycling rather than running to keep the impact down.

I'm really a runner, having just completed the London Marathon for the fourth time. I was introduced the rower by a work colleague and am getting into it now. It's a great alternative to running when the weather isn't great or the joints are a bit sore.

Started rowing seriously in Jan '06 after two or three of years in which I went nowhere near an erg. Now I'm addicted!
Took part in my first competition in 2007 when I competed in the Scottish IRC. Followed that up a year later at SIRC '08. Hope to attend BIRC later this year.

The Georgetown Crew greeting,"Never Row", takes on new meaning on an Erg. There is something to being blissfully ignorant of exactly how you're doing when you hit the wall midway through a piece on the water.

All my rowing is set at 10.000m distance. I aim to complete each one sub 40'. The photograph shows me 3/4 of the way through a 10,000m row with a bit of a sweat on and consentrating, as ever, on that split!
My PB is 37:56.0 (1:53.8) in June 2006. I did the damage in the first half of the row with 1:51 and 1:52 splits, I then hung in there for the the remainder. Weight control is also an added bonus to my training routine. I completed a marathon in August '07 in 3hrs 15"08.4'
Life-time total as of April 2009 - 3,638,388m.

My fourth season. Again I want to row at least 1 million meters. And since I seem to be free of injuries at the moment I also hope to row some PB's (rowed some already in the first month of the new season)). My rankings will have to be at least within the 20 percent for my agegroup. At the end of the season, that is!

Hey Free Spirit and fellow rowers.
This year (2009) will be a hard year. To break any personal record will be a battle up hill. 1 year older and with a pretty nice time signature,
I can only hope to do my best.
Goals: 2K in 6:20, 1K sub 3 minutes.
Means: More high Df rowing and weights to get up muscle-build + long rows.

Erg owner since 1988. Back in the 90's I had some top 10 placings for the 1/2 hour and 1 hour rankings and did 10 million meters from 94-98. These days I use the erg mostly for cross training but sometimes get into a groove of accumulating meters.
Road cycling has been my primary sport since the 70's. I am currently riding over 12,000 miles a year and doing weekly long rides of 100 miles or more year round.
If you are a road cyclist who is successfully cross training with the erg, drop me an email.

When my C2 first arrived 3 years ago I hopped on and rowed a 2K in 8:40. It was so hard I was wasted for almost 2 hours after. I stopped rowing till this last summer (2009) when I resumed to work on losing weight. I never thought I'd even work up to a 1 hour row. Now 1 hour is a rest day row and I feel great compared to how I used to feel. 26 lbs lost and counting!

Started rowing in February 2006 in a desperate bid to fight off the encroaching middle-aged spread brought on by a comfortable and happy life :)
Getting into a routine of an easy 5K early each workday morning, alternating weights and a hard 10K in the evenings, and a longer row at the weekend.

I just use the machines when it is too dark or windy to row. I hate spending much time on them because I have work so hard to keep the result honest. In the winter it is part of the weekly routine, to keep fit for the masters rowing season.
My goal was to get fit enough to row for 30mins without passing out. My next goal is to row sub 7mins for the 2k, before passing out.

Want to make all sorts of goals: 315 squat, 365 deadlift, 20 reps dead hang pullups, 200 reps on the kettlebell Secret Service Snatch Test (email me if you want to know what that is). But most of all...I want to go sub-7 2k on the erg...the greatest exercise machine ever invented. Going to start cranking out the metres now to get the endurance base I'll need to make that goal.

Going for the 100k holiday challenge and then for 1 million logged meters - very addictive and fun. Good alternative to running on rainy days - and then you can even watch champions league simultanious.

Started Rowing training on April 24th 2007, after piling on pounds over the last year (up to 136.5kg/300lbs). Since then am down to 108.9kg, spurred on by the motivation of competing at various events around the country. Recent triumphs have been a sub 5 mile (1609m) and a new PB for the 500m of 1:19.6 at the Newark Indoor Rowing Champs 2008
