Passed 8 million lifetime meters on 27 November 2006. I've found that focusing on about an hour of rowing per day has been a motivating goal for this season. I also find that being a member of Free Spirits is a very inspiring force as there are so many members whose workouts are just amazing.

I am the other half of the wife-husband team on the 10,000 meter board and in Free Spirits. We stayed on the 10K board the last two years, and are somewhat less compulsive now, but we intend to finish on the 10K board again. We started erging at the suggestion of a trainer at an US Sailing symposium in 2003 that rowing was more sailing specific than elliptical machines. Like many others on the boards, a former long distance runner with defective legs.

I received my rower on March 25, 2005 and have since become hooked. I had never much cared for exercising since it always seemed boring but rowing is truly addicting. It's very rewarding to see my average 500 meter time drop as my body gets more conditioned.

Well after the injury hell of 2007/8 I am now ready to hit 2008/9 season.
Its been hell the last 12 months and now I am feeling the pain in each stroke due to not that much rowing last season.
I'm starting off very slowly building back up the fitness, so the aim for this year will be to just row and not get any injuries.

All my rowing is set at 10.000m distance. I aim to complete each one sub 40'. The photograph shows me 3/4 of the way through a 10,000m row with a bit of a sweat on and consentrating, as ever, on that split!
My PB is 37:56.0 (1:53.8) in June 2006. I did the damage in the first half of the row with 1:51 and 1:52 splits, I then hung in there for the the remainder. Weight control is also an added bonus to my training routine. I completed a marathon in August '07 in 3hrs 15"08.4'
Life-time total as of April 2009 - 3,638,388m.

My water rowing weight was 96kg so my ergo is here in an effort to get me back there. Joining the Free Spirits (www.freespiritsrowing.com) has been fun and encouraged me to get working again.
I managed a few hundred thousand metres last season, but failed to do the annual end of season marathon (I did a FM in 2004 and 2005). New baby and all that... This year my target is 700,000m. Mind you, at the rate I have rowed since the motivation of Free Spirits, I will achieve 2 million! It can't last...

Erg owner since 1988. Back in the 90's I had some top 10 placings for the 1/2 hour and 1 hour rankings and did 10 million meters from 94-98. These days I use the erg mostly for cross training but sometimes get into a groove of accumulating meters.
Road cycling has been my primary sport since the 70's. I am currently riding over 12,000 miles a year and doing weekly long rides of 100 miles or more year round.
If you are a road cyclist who is successfully cross training with the erg, drop me an email.

Hey Free Spirit and fellow rowers.
This year (2009) will be a hard year. To break any personal record will be a battle up hill. 1 year older and with a pretty nice time signature,
I can only hope to do my best.
Goals: 2K in 6:20, 1K sub 3 minutes.
Means: More high Df rowing and weights to get up muscle-build + long rows.

My goal this year is to make the world top 750 for 10k and 5k, which probably means knocking 2 minutes off my best time (update - I eventually managed it - albeit my top ranking (44th) was achieved when the season started and before any of the serious rowers had entered their best times!)
Any helpful pointers or ideas for motivation would be much appreciated.
A back injury set me back in early November but as I write this update (19th Nov) I'm getting back on track and looking to do the Holiday Challenge.

Dabbled in rowing for six months or so a few years ago
A visit from my brother earlier this year prompted me to dust off the old Model C, and now every morning starts with a coffee followed by a half hour or so of rowing before waking up the rest of the household!
Aiming to hit the million metres by Christmas, and get the 2k time under 6.30 before I reach 40!

I had never seen the inside of a gym and still can't swim. In February 2003 I met my fiance, who convinced me to get a little fitter so I joined a gym near work in the October of that year. A bad motor cycle accident in my teens and a couple skiing accidents a decade ago have left my knees and an ankle in a bad way so I started rowing and cycling rather than running to keep the impact down.

And since I seem to be free of injuries at the moment I also hope to row some PB's (rowed some already in the first month of the new season)).
