My SkiErg is getting lots of use, even when I am not near it! Back in the cities, the advanced training group from Balance Nordic used it as a threshold 2k max effort testing device to set training zones for the season. Joel Woodward, one of the group’s core members, told me in an email, “I literally still had the shakes when I went to bed… that test is so hard!” After seeing many people compete in the SkiErg World Sprints 1000m competition, I could vouch for that statement! I enjoyed the opportunity to travel to Saratoga Springs, New York with Peter Dreissigacker for the Joy of Sculling Conference December 9–11. Jim Joy has done an amazing job of building this conference into one of the largest gatherings of rowing coaches from both the US and Canada. The success of this conference was further confirmed by several of the award recipients who mentioned that they attended when they were first starting out as coaches, and the influence it had on their careers. It’s been quite a few years since I attended the USRowing Annual Convention. I went this time primarily to complete my Level III coaching certification, meet up with some old rowing buddies, and hopefully pick up a few new tools for my toolbox as coach of the Michigan Technological University crew. As someone who has always loved the indoor rower and has used it as a critical part of my own and my athletes’ training, I was prepared for lots of references to the erg as the machine rowers hate and coaches rely on to separate the fitness levels of competitive rowers within their crews. Concept2 had a great weekend in Boston at the New England Boomers and Seniors Expo, held October 29–30 at the Seaport World Trade Center Boston, despite low attendance due to an unexpected fall storm. The record-breaking storm dumped heavy, wet snow across southern New England, prompting Governor Deval Patrick to declare a state of emergency.
