An update from Kevin in Engineering:
I’d like to introduce Fred, the newest employee in the Engineering group at Concept2.
Since his first day, we’re not quite sure how we ever got along without him! He’s a hard worker, often starting late in the afternoon and working through the night. He even comes in most weekends. He’s quiet, clean, and is always encouraging us to come up with new ways to do business.
What’s Fred’s secret to success? He happens to be a 3D Printer from Stratasys Inc.
You may be wondering “what’s a 3D printer?” While it sounds like something Spock would use on Star Trek, it’s actually an advanced manufacturing technology that takes computer-aided designs (CAD) and produces plastic parts with the same shape and dimensions. We can then use those parts to test various designs, prove out a concept, or build jigs and fixtures for manufacturing. The possibilities are endless!
For example, we’ve been working hard on the development of the Skinny shaft for quite a while. There are a number of new parts that allow us to use standard sleeves and blades on a skinnier shaft. We printed multiple iterations of test parts to refine the fit and design, and even used parts for test rowing prototypes in the field.
Fred has become a daily part of the product development process here at Concept2. It’s incredibly liberating to have the flexibility to make a part ten different ways and test what works best. That kind of flexibility results in creative solutions, reduced development time, and ultimately better products from Concept2.
He may not be much for conversation, but I think Fred and I are going to be friends for a long, long time…
