Getting Back on the SkiErg

It’s officially summer here in northern Vermont, in terms of the calendar if not always the temperatures. To celebrate the solstice, I got up at 5 a.m. yesterday morning and sculled 21k on the water for the Concept2 Summer Solstice Challenge. Smooth water, blue skies—a great way to start the day.

So now that summer is finally here, it’s a little hard to think about skiing, but I’m realizing that the first ski races are only about five months away! As they always say, “fast skiers are made in the summer.” It’s time to add some SkiErg and rollerskiing to my summer training modes of rowing and running.

And conveniently, there’s motivation headed my way in the form of the Concept2 SkiErg Loppet! This annual online event challenges you to accumulate 100,000 meters on the SkiErg during the month of July. It can be done in as many sessions as you wish. If you want to spread it across the entire month, that’s 3226 meters per day. I think I’ll want some days off, so I’ll aim for 20 days averaging 5k each. Slice it any way you like it, just get to 100k by July 31 and your name will be added to the Honor Board. You will also be able to download a personal certificate of completion and you’ll have access to the SkiErg Loppet store on Café Press. More importantly, you will have jump-started your training for next winter’s racing.
